A lot has changed in five years. Aidan is VERY tall. No one fits in the <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2013/03/peep-toe-slippers-for-spring.html">Peep-Toe slippers</a> anymore. I'm all out of <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2010/08/homemade-ketchup-for-fun-and-profit.html">homemade ketchup</a>. And that sense of community that I couldn't yet find in Farmington in my <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2016/02/random-thoughts-on-thursday.html">last blog post</a>, February 18 of 2016... I found it! I found it big. In fact, work on a grant application for arts funding is what brought me back to the old blog today anyway! So I opened it up and decided to read my last post. Life has moved very fast in five years.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNsZClYPVeBGJOubOk6OYIwANaQLQMM8Qt9BwXK8xEmQmp2eS-D5Mfa7D9MJF7YpJW-v7D3FhGme_3Sg2S8ypouDOpbWOiyF5cuaB8gcmyWrpA5ECZWoO7XDpHr8650t8RoJgfxSv8PsA/s2048/YB1-10-21.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1539" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNsZClYPVeBGJOubOk6OYIwANaQLQMM8Qt9BwXK8xEmQmp2eS-D5Mfa7D9MJF7YpJW-v7D3FhGme_3Sg2S8ypouDOpbWOiyF5cuaB8gcmyWrpA5ECZWoO7XDpHr8650t8RoJgfxSv8PsA/s320/YB1-10-21.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>And many things have changed since that post was written. But I'm only going to talk about one of them. I was a person seeking a community of artists and art. I had lived in Michigan for eleven years at that time, but I still hadn't found what I needed. Now I have found it. And while I knew I missed it, I didn't realize just how much until I found it again. </p><p>So I haven't had quite as much time for homemaking. There are still plenty of <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2013/04/earth-muffins-in-house.html">muffins</a> and pies turned out around here. I still spend more money <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2011/08/birthdays-and-beets.html">canning things</a> in jars than it would cost to just go buy the jar. I don't sew <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2013/04/two-dresses-and-bow-tie.html">dresses</a> or bags, but I do sew scout patches and stuffed animal wounds. </p><p>But I get to make something else. I get to make art with people that I love. I get to direct Shakespeare. I get to teach acting. I get to sing with my best friends. I get to support local artists in a gallery space at <a href="https://kickstartfarmington.org">KickstART Farmington</a>. I get to support the arts community in Farmington and Farmington Hills as an arts commissioner. And, for me, its better than muffins. Even my really good muffins. And you should know, if you are writing a muffin blog, I support you one hundred percent! Keep doing it.</p><p>My path back to myself came by way of a community chorus. It had its highs and it had its lows. I met some amazing people and we built some really beautiful things. It didn't last, but it was a doorway for me into some amazing opportunities. And those opportunities just keep multiplying. Life keeps changing and turning and growing. My life is filled to overflowing with people and projects that feed my soul.</p><p>And Wendell Berry still gets it right...</p><p><i style="text-align: justify;">"Good artists are people who can stick things together so that they stay stuck. They know how to gather things into formal arrangements that are intelligible, memorable, and lasting. Good forms confer health upon the things that they gather together. Farms, families, and communities are forms of art just as are poems, paintings, and symphonies. None of these things would exist if we did not make them. We can make them either well or poorly; this choice is another thing we make." </i></p><div style="text-align: justify;">So here's to learning to stick things together, learning to survive what doesn't stay stuck, and supporting each other all along the way, be it muffins or Macbeth.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>Lindsayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05530604466148433510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-593467206657978246.post-29136075431837086572016-02-18T10:43:00.001-05:002016-02-18T23:48:52.525-05:00Random thoughts on a Thursday<div style="text-align: justify;">

I never realized how lucky I was to grow up surrounded by people that intrinsically knew this. My family, friends and community were artists daily. The people of Youngstown are still there creating a beautiful life that is perfectly tangible. Every time we go home, I feel that community, that hope, that peace that comes from the familiar, that comes from what is known, that comes from a sense of place. The people in Farmington are doing all those things, too. I just can't feel it... yet.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you know us at all in real life or read my blog, then you know that we have homeschooled our kids since my oldest was in preschool. It became clear to us very early that traditional school was not a good fit for our family. I didn't necessarily know the "why" of it at first, only that it felt very wrong for us. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We follow a "Classical" model of education at home. It's based on the classical pattern of the trivium, a three-part process for training the mind. You can read more about it <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Well-Trained-Mind-Guide-Classical-Education/dp/0393067084/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1455810060&sr=1-1&keywords=the+well+trained+mind">here</a> if you're interested. We spend the first four years in the "grammar" stage, learning the building blocks for all subjects. In fifth grade, we'll begin the "logic" stage where memorization and fact-finding is replaced by more analytical thinking. Then, in ninth grade, we'll begin the "rhetoric" stage where we'll attempt to apply the logic practices from stage two to the information from stage one and form our own conclusions expressed through language. Right now, we are just absorbing all the language that came before us: fiction, histories, criticism, poetry. That is what I see missing in public education. I don't want my children reading some mediocre writer's interpretation of what someone great once said or did. I want them to have access to the first hand account. Classical education does that beautifully.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am not an enemy of public school or compulsory schooling in general. For most people it works fine. I am, however, adamantly opposed to current education standards, or "the common core". This is not because the math is "hard". In fact, we use Singapore Math already. It's not because I'm afraid that the government is recording my child's key strokes and filing them away in some vault, though I have no doubt they are, and they are already thinking that we spend way too much time watching Russians evaluate new kitchen gadgets on Youtube. It's not because there is too much testing that tests nothing at all, even though there is... way too much. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My issue is with the great devaluing of all that is beautiful and mysterious in the world. I can't understand how one size fits all is ever a good thing. We are who we are because of our community. Every community is different and has different needs. Setting up schools as systems of production makes for poor schools and unhappy populations. Teaching what is only necessary for one person's definition of "success" is a recipe for disaster. I just finished reading a great <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Life-Miracle-Against-Modern-Superstition/dp/1582431418/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455810012&sr=8-1&keywords=life+is+a+miracle">book</a> by Wendell Berry in which he states that, "We should banish from our speech and writing any use of the word 'machine' as an explanation or definition of anything that is not a machine. Our understanding of creatures and our use of them are not improved by calling them machines." Public schools in Prussia and then the U.S. were built on the idea that they were there to homogenize a population and produce workers. And yet, even the public school of a hundred years ago would be appalled at what we feel is unimportant for students to learn today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It makes me sad when I see people devaluing any way of looking at the world that isn't scientific. My husband has listened to me go on and on many times about how much I dislike Bill Nye, the Science Guy... and I'm probably the only one who feels this way. But to me, his snark at all things "less than science" that people have used to learn about their world from the beginning of time has spilled over into pop culture. Anyone who looks at the world with a view that is anything other than scientific is fair game for ridicule. Science isn't the only way to "know" something. The idea that learning about the world scientifically as an end game is a losing proposition. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nonfiction isn't the only way to learn about the world. The lack of time and access that students, especially high school students, have to classical literature, poetry, music and art is a great failing in our time. No matter what your child grows up to be, portrait painter or house painter, they deserve access to the very best humanity has ever produced. We shouldn't be the ones deciding what they need to know and what is irrelevant. All the knowledge in the world without the ability to DO something with it, create something with it, or just think about it, is useless.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am proud to think of all of my friends that are scientists and all that are artists. The ones I look up to the most are both. When it comes time to "save the world" that's who I'm putting my money on. I don't think science will save us from global catastrophe. I don't think our own ideas about religion will save us from cultural genocide. I think the well-read, humble people with a vast knowledge of where they came from and who they came from, will be the ones to bring about lasting social change and environmental protection. So I will take my kids to science museums and art museums, maker fairs and medieval faires, catholic churches and muslim mosques. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And while I lack faith in our current school system, I put my trust in our community. I have seen many homeschoolers toss around the phrase, "I've seen the village and I don't want it raising my children." And I couldn't possibly disagree more with that sentiment. I love the village. The hope for my children lies in the village. All of you: the artists, the scientists, factory workers, police officers, accountants, stay-at-home moms and dad, engineers, painters, dancers, actors, grocery checkers, scout leaders, drag queens, historians and everyone else who will look my children in the eye, answer their questions, forgive their occasional impertinence and teach them that the world is immeasurably large and at the same time as tiny and intimate as they could imagine. </div>

Yesterday, we celebrated Fat Tuesday with some Mardi Gras recipes and activities. It's the only day of the year that we toss the word "fat" around so carelessly. We usually go with "puffy", as in, I can't button my jeans today because I'm too puffy from the three Paczski and two slices of King Cake I ate yesterday.</div>

My friends have been encouraging me to start blogging again. In the past, it has taken me a lot of time to try to find something interesting to blog about, photograph nicely, and then write about in some entertaining way. I have felt that if I couldn't do it frequently and perfectly, then I shouldn't bother. BUT, I can't really do much of anything frequently and pretty-much NOTHING perfectly, and still I have missed blogging. So, I'm going to give it a go, infrequently -with whatever happens to be going on... sometimes dull, poorly photographed and probably not all that well-written. I'm sure you guys are going to REALLY enjoy it! </div>

We kicked off our Fat Tuesday with some Paczski(s?) early this morning before we got into our school work. We didn't stand in line in Hamtramck for hours to get the authentic ones. We just picked some up at the grocery store last night on the way home from church. Everyone cranked through their work today so that we could make it to the bakery to pick up our King Cake before they closed. I spent the afternoon working on some Fat Tuesday recipes while the kids played in the snow. You should check back tomorrow for some recipes, activity ideas, and pics of kids that didn't get "the baby" crying and pouting. I mean, unless I have quit blogging by then...</div>

I know you probably all thought that we must be starving over here since the "What We're Eating" posts disappeared for a while. What can I say? We got <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2015/02/gullivers-travels.html">a dog</a>, I became a <a href="http://www.marykay.com/lindsayhawkins">Mary Kay</a> lady and we've had colds, croups and ear infections aplenty.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But... I'm going to try to get back on track updating everyone with all of our comings, goings and eatings.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week, I thought I would share my favorite <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/jamie-oliver/pizza-dough-recipe.html">Pizza Dough Recipe</a>. It comes from one of my fav cookbooks, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Jamie-Home-Cook-Your-Good/dp/1401322425/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427678848&sr=8-1&keywords=jamie+at+home">Jamie at Home</a>. </i> I have been making it since Aidan was a baby (along with several other recipes) and it is my absolute favorite. It's easy. It doesn't require anything too weird and it always turns out great. It also makes a big batch so I can freeze few dough balls for another pizza night?</div>

Just so you know: I ALWAYS use the mix of high-gluten bread flour and semolina they mention. But, feel free to throw caution to the wind and go with bread flour all the way!</div>

We actually hadn't gone there to GET a dog. We were just browsing. We found this guy online and went to take a peek. He was just too sweet to leave behind. Matt, being the good guy that he is, asked a few questions and then offered to pick up pizza.</div>

Just a quick post today to share this YUMMY and EASY recipe we tried while Matt was in Japan. You can find the link <a href="http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/penne-with-broccoli-and-mushrooms-2844">here</a>! I had been trying to clean out some odds and ends in the fridge left over from our last <a href="https://doortodoororganics.com/">Door to Door</a> box. I googled pasta, mushrooms and broccoli and this popped up. I had everything on hand so we went for it! So glad! It was a hit, easy to make and delicious! It reheated well the next day for lunches, too!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiajBSor5Wyvb_bp-srmSrssQd4cO96XAvoOECnZFmsKnfEqoRyYXlExCwrs4L54R7WlrmTpEfITyprqMDPEiY3-BeLFGUNs_dO9fFtZO7hC9SAN3EMpszg9eTUyXZQk43DCGBfQLOuWHw/s1600/DSC_0233.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiajBSor5Wyvb_bp-srmSrssQd4cO96XAvoOECnZFmsKnfEqoRyYXlExCwrs4L54R7WlrmTpEfITyprqMDPEiY3-BeLFGUNs_dO9fFtZO7hC9SAN3EMpszg9eTUyXZQk43DCGBfQLOuWHw/s400/DSC_0233.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been hoarding pans for several years now. It all started with a dutch oven. One winter, I decided that I NEEDED one in the worst way. My dear sweet husband purchased a big, bright, blue doufeu from Le Creuset which we lovingly christened "William Doufeu". An orange griddle pan soon followed and then lots of bright yellow bakeware. Eventually, my mom and I developed a system (still in practice today) which suits us perfectly. It goes a little something like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Go to an outlet mall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Buy a fifty pound pan right at the beginning of your trip so you can carry it through the rest of the outlet mall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. Attach its' sentiment to the nearest available holiday; and,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. Voila! "It's a gift! How could I refuse!?!"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, up until very recently, I had been sort of "saving" these good pans in the back of my cupboard and using my everyday pans. However, I do a lot of cooking and the everyday ones were really starting to wear out. Rather than replacing them; which, I totally wouldn't MIND doing by the way, I decided to just embrace my fancy pans and start using them all the time. They make ordinary dinners, like tonight's overcooked Tuna Noodle Casserole, seem oh, so chic. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And, really, what am I waiting for?? Life is just too short not to use "the good pans". If every show my husband watches is correct, then zombies and vampires are our most imminent threat and we'll soon be forced to start destroying the respective brains and hearts of all of our closest friends any day now. Our total annihilation is literally right around the corner. All of this has led me to consider the important things in life... does the lifetime guarantee on enameled cast iron extend to The Undead; and, if I'm going to have to stab people in the head, I really should upgrade to the Henckels.<br />
<br />

Today, I thought I'd share something that will help you to appear Supermom-ish next Valentine's Day with minimal effort on your part. I found this awesome <a href="http://ateachingmommy.com/2012/01/valentine-expanded/">free packet of Valentine's Day printables</a>. There were so many great things that we didn't even get to them all. We ran out of time so I packed some away for next year!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgps1yQB0QWPV-ie99JtpYNRqbxptF2ofAtO1J293ftEsq-PYPnks1ZpEcS6-f0xSRSsITaVdukgdLiQRmu_yMBRQ_fB0JKViJuPNcv6qOQJvvbvejOAfRha9iG70YA9zuGSJiqW15J3_E/s1600/DSC_0145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgps1yQB0QWPV-ie99JtpYNRqbxptF2ofAtO1J293ftEsq-PYPnks1ZpEcS6-f0xSRSsITaVdukgdLiQRmu_yMBRQ_fB0JKViJuPNcv6qOQJvvbvejOAfRha9iG70YA9zuGSJiqW15J3_E/s1600/DSC_0145.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the Friday before Valentine's Day, we included some of them in our regular school work. Annalise loved sorting the cutouts by size and then matching them with real conversation hearts.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUDhw0tPdtAudZDKOW7q1A0if5mb_E0DQ9XsCyumjSorq7ha98qusUgkhrc3GcuS2AR8-LOwxE6VCuX3Cg6VfxxM-tFraCT_X8JetgtVjwlDf6H7V2WTzJX5_RXO-t7o3PH23ZKTPIEQI/s1600/DSC_0148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUDhw0tPdtAudZDKOW7q1A0if5mb_E0DQ9XsCyumjSorq7ha98qusUgkhrc3GcuS2AR8-LOwxE6VCuX3Cg6VfxxM-tFraCT_X8JetgtVjwlDf6H7V2WTzJX5_RXO-t7o3PH23ZKTPIEQI/s1600/DSC_0148.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Next, we all played several rounds of "Roll & Cover Sweethearts". It was actually a really fun game that they could all play together! (The constant candy-eating may have had something to do with their willing participation.)</div>

<br />
On Valentine's Day, I surprised the kids with our usual table of Valentine fun! We had heart-shaped pancakes and strawberries for breakfast. At each of their places, I put more games and activities along with their Valentine presents.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF2kCjNcNWY_212Tm5uIQvyBlkJAQKNJRAjHFDYpN5Vqr8qz4_sq9g536vPjsLpCCowntOupBo96MUIPGcbPmGoics1zCCgSZuG8Ty8tBzLmV5AfrZhiqdm86e7EQh7EuUfHmblZcKUwg/s1600/DSC_0180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF2kCjNcNWY_212Tm5uIQvyBlkJAQKNJRAjHFDYpN5Vqr8qz4_sq9g536vPjsLpCCowntOupBo96MUIPGcbPmGoics1zCCgSZuG8Ty8tBzLmV5AfrZhiqdm86e7EQh7EuUfHmblZcKUwg/s1600/DSC_0180.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Valentine graphing with their own boxes of conversation hearts was a BIG HIT! They loved comparing their colors and amounts to see who had more or less of each color.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhofe6q_jodki8NFENkuKz2zdQJ7GrJUhhpQ09gboYGS1FXrUGDaavxEdVsUeZ4zufut3WgSSC4peDwoRnXSN9RPmPjr3oGYlWYVNO-NkUaKPK2Tn4kCCzDDE4eKk7dx2BiZLwNojwDyfQ/s1600/DSC_0183.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhofe6q_jodki8NFENkuKz2zdQJ7GrJUhhpQ09gboYGS1FXrUGDaavxEdVsUeZ4zufut3WgSSC4peDwoRnXSN9RPmPjr3oGYlWYVNO-NkUaKPK2Tn4kCCzDDE4eKk7dx2BiZLwNojwDyfQ/s1600/DSC_0183.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also had sequencing pages, mazes and drawing practice. I put everything in sleeve protectors and they used erasable markers. This way, we can use our printables every year!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XM7HyuoOikHNGUUI9y56dh1oPLDgSGMwSU-i2xPozE5wswsD1MeHtlSK1ZT3TedhHhs1znQS4RuKxEWCeZJRnMqEJmPO391i84H9gddClxTrfQP_aN71uIhKOMSySCGg1V_x0shFKpM/s1600/DSC_0172.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XM7HyuoOikHNGUUI9y56dh1oPLDgSGMwSU-i2xPozE5wswsD1MeHtlSK1ZT3TedhHhs1znQS4RuKxEWCeZJRnMqEJmPO391i84H9gddClxTrfQP_aN71uIhKOMSySCGg1V_x0shFKpM/s1600/DSC_0172.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I think this was such a great package that I honestly would have happily paid for it! You should hurry and print a copy just in case it disappears before next Valentine's Day!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We were feeling pretty crafty this year for Valentine's Day so for the next few Tuesdays, I'll share some of our Valentine crafts... at least until you can't stand all the love anymore. First up...these fun personalized "Conversation Hearts" for the kids.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I found these wooden hearts at Michaels for .99 and I just couldn't resist! I just gave them each two coats of acrylic paint.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEQhIGzj3Ve8GBFonMXpFDryb9m2S6dXuFiylpw0qlvCD-2BljUd6IDaWlnVu5RYXSLhYhe_cTNCiiNLbXENXohWr86r0GZc5htcU7mtjQ3AYPUDp7v0-SAFeJqmbTtJQJ4O5zM3ceoJg/s1600/DSC_0127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEQhIGzj3Ve8GBFonMXpFDryb9m2S6dXuFiylpw0qlvCD-2BljUd6IDaWlnVu5RYXSLhYhe_cTNCiiNLbXENXohWr86r0GZc5htcU7mtjQ3AYPUDp7v0-SAFeJqmbTtJQJ4O5zM3ceoJg/s1600/DSC_0127.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When the paint was nice and dry, I lightly traced a straight line so that I could line my letters up neatly. (Note: I should have also measured so that I could center things... thank goodness there were some exclamation points I could tack on the end!)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiivLNKC_Ay2T9CVYQfDOqQoRAAxIav6yAXKDU937BEoBdlffVBPpmYGlamy6rsBTljujg8YXBWMPV5FTtTdvCXNx-0EjyxnxnQnXbQ8ucz4hVpiTxY6ZuM9z7GwZfNNDH6ThElzmZP_48/s1600/DSC_0129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiivLNKC_Ay2T9CVYQfDOqQoRAAxIav6yAXKDU937BEoBdlffVBPpmYGlamy6rsBTljujg8YXBWMPV5FTtTdvCXNx-0EjyxnxnQnXbQ8ucz4hVpiTxY6ZuM9z7GwZfNNDH6ThElzmZP_48/s1600/DSC_0129.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, I applied these fun, puffy white sticker letters to spell out each of their names. I had to spring for two packs since we need about five hundred A's.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXVhk-IXnFn8VrlLC3PhyphenhyphenGWJaTm_Q0ApwtLo7pcEC8lg_4tv_9xtU4gwXcM2Q2Hkh3Z-lKTCx-FhF7U8OCVGWE2AAq6Dbu-20cAxbjsb53FULy0BYZHZyyCfewI-7NfXBotwHN4KkTL1g/s1600/DSC_0130.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXVhk-IXnFn8VrlLC3PhyphenhyphenGWJaTm_Q0ApwtLo7pcEC8lg_4tv_9xtU4gwXcM2Q2Hkh3Z-lKTCx-FhF7U8OCVGWE2AAq6Dbu-20cAxbjsb53FULy0BYZHZyyCfewI-7NfXBotwHN4KkTL1g/s1600/DSC_0130.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I sprayed them with a thin coat of clear lacquer to shine them up and help seal the stickers on more permanently.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhOjBAde1WwfWh3TnbfBYeKQDkfS65de2m0qRefOFWPIupi-hyDi8mvVxUaCCRCSAfubEEcziMlkQamvN_8umS8jGVqT9gn3t5L2KtZM24fNKjBY5-r5GnNBEKQDjvdQKoKQQ0coRbLcY/s1600/DSC_0132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhOjBAde1WwfWh3TnbfBYeKQDkfS65de2m0qRefOFWPIupi-hyDi8mvVxUaCCRCSAfubEEcziMlkQamvN_8umS8jGVqT9gn3t5L2KtZM24fNKjBY5-r5GnNBEKQDjvdQKoKQQ0coRbLcY/s1600/DSC_0132.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When they were totally dry, I hot glued a ribbon loop to the back of each one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD2C0bupk3ajVCuIR4a8ecdx0RjQDBv1tGzmzIZbmKXpmRaTgu9bFqU2QlBueb4UgvKmVhsNunwAd3nyCqHB6nzORT336wUolNWzDApXMZ84EQswf4zCWeK4H91uWvwboGslE5Fvbfk9E/s1600/DSC_0164.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD2C0bupk3ajVCuIR4a8ecdx0RjQDBv1tGzmzIZbmKXpmRaTgu9bFqU2QlBueb4UgvKmVhsNunwAd3nyCqHB6nzORT336wUolNWzDApXMZ84EQswf4zCWeK4H91uWvwboGslE5Fvbfk9E/s1600/DSC_0164.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">I think they turned out super cute. They were cheap, fun and easy to make! They were certainly less time-consuming than our </span><a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2011/02/heart-of-conversation.html" style="text-align: justify;">homemade conversation hearts</a><span style="text-align: justify;"> a few years ago!</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixLdLe1uBB2gotIf1VViPuisAr-8jhSj3Z56eAKQF4XtI0hSeN42El28L5GDrayH-ZHIk8QBh_oFuX41kCjQp8brgyKVz124XKzd7Vj7WBsGcdaeEpdhbOpBk0Wr-MHY02nsPX71OZROE/s1600/DSC_0165.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixLdLe1uBB2gotIf1VViPuisAr-8jhSj3Z56eAKQF4XtI0hSeN42El28L5GDrayH-ZHIk8QBh_oFuX41kCjQp8brgyKVz124XKzd7Vj7WBsGcdaeEpdhbOpBk0Wr-MHY02nsPX71OZROE/s1600/DSC_0165.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hung them on the kids' chairs after they went to bed as a surprise for Valentine's Day. We usually try to have a fun Valentine's Day morning every year. I always set the table with lots of pink and red dishes and decorate it with ribbon and flowers and little treats! I'll share more of that later this week!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6i4VO9LBUacfwrTVJzjK6LJyt8d2EBFUvkVwZix4yed4WQv4XWOQVOJ01Un3ZKkHT6KUdk9s9EiBfaTIqDBe_cLTQpaxvsbnYLI2Y3nVvNJBPE8Mqo0j8gzTWW7x8A3BtGZRDgHOo3Do/s1600/DSC_0167.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6i4VO9LBUacfwrTVJzjK6LJyt8d2EBFUvkVwZix4yed4WQv4XWOQVOJ01Un3ZKkHT6KUdk9s9EiBfaTIqDBe_cLTQpaxvsbnYLI2Y3nVvNJBPE8Mqo0j8gzTWW7x8A3BtGZRDgHOo3Do/s1600/DSC_0167.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My plan is to use these as decorations on their bedroom doors every year. I'd like to do something similar for them for each of the holidays and just hang little hooks on the doors that we can use to rotate decorations... guess I better start hunting for shamrocks!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrTmzl_t2R2HnnCljaLPnPJwlTi8j1anbZD36pjYvcn0tl6uMEtvVfE1sbjQlE71srZtWp5ALdx84lbgbdr1FlgG7TgjHi-gU4HNYdRwythZOASuR8GyC8OV1rghV8JC9tS-GYymkYD74/s1600/DSC_0071.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrTmzl_t2R2HnnCljaLPnPJwlTi8j1anbZD36pjYvcn0tl6uMEtvVfE1sbjQlE71srZtWp5ALdx84lbgbdr1FlgG7TgjHi-gU4HNYdRwythZOASuR8GyC8OV1rghV8JC9tS-GYymkYD74/s1600/DSC_0071.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Macaroni and Cheese is something of a mystery in this house. It used to be the ONLY convenience food that all three of my kids would eat. Then, one day, when Aidan was four, I made a terrible mistake. I bought a box of dinosaur mac and cheese that was deemed "scary" and that was the end of that. He has literally never eaten it again. He is older, wiser, braver and even a fan of dinosaurs; but, he will have nothing to do with mac and cheese of any kind.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiolagAbbevPjjJ_4FckcooVZgffCg_zT_lTLoJsR3eqyvkVTWcbMtTfVh6KEk0MznT91s_NKGA0rTvV8PK_d-v_XSjUpv2ybrzec-UhQVMxqFHXflUdPQG_sRFQLBeszA0tfeZUuyLMiw/s1600/DSC_0075.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiolagAbbevPjjJ_4FckcooVZgffCg_zT_lTLoJsR3eqyvkVTWcbMtTfVh6KEk0MznT91s_NKGA0rTvV8PK_d-v_XSjUpv2ybrzec-UhQVMxqFHXflUdPQG_sRFQLBeszA0tfeZUuyLMiw/s1600/DSC_0075.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">The girls are another matter. They love macaroni and cheese. They like it in restaurants, made from scratch recipes at home and in a box. The only problem is that they only like it in SOME restaurants, made from scratch at home SOME of the time and in SOME boxes. This sounds like it would be easy enough to solve: just make or buy the kind they like, right? The only problem is that the macaroni they like (and don't like) doesn't seem to have ANY definable qualities or common traits. It seems to be one giant game of hit or miss and I literally have no idea how to play this game. I can buy a three pack of boxed mac & cheese and Addie will like two of the boxes, while Annalise only likes the third one. In a restaurant, I will only let one of them get it now so that there will be another meal to share if things should go awry. Annalise loves the mac and cheese at Zingerman's Roadhouse; but, it is just way too "real" for Ads. And at home, who knows? I think I might have stirred it with the wrong spoon and ruined the last batch??</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2d0FzIXDr0VZsRB7MtDRO4qNpYGctm5xpqPF8m8K7QG4xASV4JCr-cEwCCTXDbWXUMjZ9oyFlE3NwslcMyaDlvX0p9Y5elo7555JQWx2tA68md1YAfHk81eHaMOd27Znry-G0uEr8QX0/s1600/DSC_0074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2d0FzIXDr0VZsRB7MtDRO4qNpYGctm5xpqPF8m8K7QG4xASV4JCr-cEwCCTXDbWXUMjZ9oyFlE3NwslcMyaDlvX0p9Y5elo7555JQWx2tA68md1YAfHk81eHaMOd27Znry-G0uEr8QX0/s1600/DSC_0074.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So... I'm always on the hunt for the PERFECT Macaroni & Cheese that will satisfy everyone. Coupled with my hunt for the ideal stuffing, it is kind of my eternal quest. It has to meet these requirements: the girls will eat it, there will be enough noodles left for Aidan to have them plain, it has enough of a gourmet feel to make me happy; and Matt, well, he doesn't care, he's just happy we saved him some.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I had high hopes for this one I found in </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Honest-Pretzels-Other-Amazing-Recipes/dp/1582463050" style="text-align: start;">Honest Pretzels</a><span style="text-align: start;">. It's a kids' cookbook I found at the library. I had hoped it would be kid-friendly; but still tasty. It turned out to be neither. Mostly, it was just mustardy. Very, very mustardy. It was rather photogenic, though. It also makes a nice big batch and because no one likes it, the leftovers last quite a while! </span></div>

<br />
Today, I thought I'd let Aidan entertain you with his new favorite song. He sings it all the time and it's super cute! They listened to a youtube video of this song in one his homeschool science classes. He LOVED it and apparently sang it nonstop until he had it memorized. In fact, I was walking across the parking lot with him after his class and a car stopped. A woman I had never met rolled down her window and yelled, "Hey! That's the kid with the element song! It's so funny! Come here and sing it!"<br />
<br />
When he got home, he used his book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Elements-Visual-Exploration-Every-Universe/dp/1579128955/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423846094&sr=8-1&keywords=element+book">The Elements</a>, by Theodore Grey, to try to memorize all of them. I highly recommend this book. Aidan has read it cover to cover and I still always find him flipping through it at bedtime. It's not a kids' book; but, it is kid-friendly and really well-written. I'm excited to order his <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Molecules-Architecture-Everything-Theodore-Gray/dp/1579129714/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423846094&sr=8-2&keywords=element+book">new book about Molecules</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The girls try to join in; but, mostly Annalise just rides in the car chanting, "Lithium, Lithium, Lithium, Lithium..." <br />
<br />

I know I'm supposed to provide you with some educational insights on Thursdays for "What We're Learning"; but, instead I thought I would share this randomness I found when I was searching through unfinished posts from last year. It was already entitled "Fried Dough and the Punic Wars"(???) I hadn't actually written anything, just posted pictures of the kids making elephant ears in their pajamas. I think it had something to do with Hannibal going... somewhere???... on an elephant and I had planned to tie all of these things neatly together in some witty essay. But I didn't. And I forgot where Hannibal was going anyway. So...think of this as a jumping-off point for your own research. Or just go make some elephant ears with this handy, graphic tutorial.</div>

This week, we decided to head to the <a href="http://www.dia.org/">Detroit Institute </a><a href="http://www.dia.org/">of Arts </a>for a little crafty fun! They have tons of fun, free drop-in workshops on the weekends, as well as many other family-friendly activities.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">First, we made a quick stop in the education wing for Snowflake Making. They had coffee filters and muffin papers and the kids got busy folding, cutting and coloring snowflakes. </span><br />
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, we headed to the Native American Gallery for some <a href="http://www.dia.org/calendar/drawing-in-the-galleries.aspx">sketching</a>. We tried to do this last weekend; but, they had closed the program early because of the snowstorm. So, this was our first experience and it was REALLY awesome! They provide everything you need: pencils, papers, easels and even these fun little drawing benches in kid and adult sizes. I knew that Addie would LOVE this. She is definitely the artist in the family and I thought this would be a fun opportunity for her. She would have stayed for hours.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Annalise had fun drawing her usual smiley faces; but, she didn't last too long.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivFJNTqkL8nNzn_99WFMCmyn9kw30plJZv0agavgwcbVbpJLjO5-S88xT4jLRIGvvYTP3fhotqU6uhbdrzZlsly6aWAPP88BC-hj53LdaZV6QPVFa91pnmk14fQrx30sF8jpZNg6B6lCc/s1600/DSC_0115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivFJNTqkL8nNzn_99WFMCmyn9kw30plJZv0agavgwcbVbpJLjO5-S88xT4jLRIGvvYTP3fhotqU6uhbdrzZlsly6aWAPP88BC-hj53LdaZV6QPVFa91pnmk14fQrx30sF8jpZNg6B6lCc/s1600/DSC_0115.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aidan sat and contemplated for a while. I didn't think he would want to participate; but, then I looked over and he was hard at work sketching a kachina doll!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We walked around a few galleries and then headed over to enjoy a concert with the Detroit Children's Choir. It was a packed house and the kids really enjoyed the music, especially singing along at the end.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last weekend, we enjoyed a great <a href="http://www.dia.org/calendar/family-sunday.aspx?id=4886&iid=">puppet show</a> produced by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/TOYBOX-THEATRE/110417645647080?sk=timeline">Toybox Theater</a> from Asheville, called Billy the Liar. It was fun for kids and parents alike! It was an absurdist puppet show of sorts and I know that all my theater peeps would love it! Everything had a very fun old-fashioned, handmade vibe and we loved the the accordion accompaniment! The kids got to spend some time with the puppeteers afterwards in the cafe, drawing pictures, talking about the show and just hanging out. They told us they were making a trip to good old <a href="http://www.marvin3m.com/">Marvins,</a> another one of our favorite spots, before they headed back to North Carolina. If you ever have the opportunity to see one of their shows, you should jump on it! </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We found the inspiration for these <a href="http://www.thenovicechefblog.com/2012/02/strawberry-nutella-poptarts/">here</a>; but, ours are a bit simpler. We just rolled out two refrigerated pie crusts a bit thinner. The kids used a large heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out their tarts.</div>

They were a really fun breakfast treat and the most realistic Pop-Tart knockoff that I've tried. All three kids had seconds and we finished them up for dessert that night after dinner. We would definitely make them again! I think they would be cute for just about any holiday with the right cookie cutters! </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to my handy new blogging schedule, I'm supposed to provide you with something funny today. This may be funny or possibly just weird. I don't know. I've taken a lot of cold medicine.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Those who know me well are already aware of my penchant for moving furniture. At one time or another, most of you have probably helped me "just slide my couch down a bit", "just help me turn this rug without moving the table", or "just help me totally switch the dining room with the living room before Matt gets back". If you are my friend, you have moved my bed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For some reason, whenever I get sick and feverish, this tendency kicks into high gear. My body's natural healing process goes something like this: "You are sick. You should lay down on the couch with a cup of tea and give your body the rest it needs... but, hmmm, can you really rest when that loveseat would look so much better on the other side of the room? There. That's better. Now everything is perfect and you can relax. Oh, wait, now that picture is totally off-center. Better go find a hammer..." On and on it goes, often for days on end, because inexplicably, my body seems slow to heal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tuesday night, when Matt came home from work, I was so miserable with a cold that I could barely function. It was his birthday so we ate dinner, had a little cake and opened presents. Then, he told me to go relax while he put the kids to bed. I decided to take him up on his offer and went to chill out. About an hour later, when he came downstairs, the conversation went something like this: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Matt: Did you move the piano by yourself?</i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me: Yes</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Matt: What?! That must have been so heavy!</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me: Not as heavy as the roll-top desk.</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Matt: (pause)</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me: You know that long sofa table that's in the garage?</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Matt: Yeah.</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me: Can you bring that in and clean it up and then bring down the printer from the office so that I can set up another school table with all my homeschooling supplies because I hate having to go upstairs all the time because then the kids lose focus while I'm gone plus I have all these fun school activities I want to put out and I feel bad because they are just up there and the kids don't even get to play with them and I know this is our dining room and all but we hardly ever have dinner in here and we use this room everyday for school and I think it will just be a much better use of our space so could you do that?</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Matt: OK. (pause) I'm gonna go get milk first.</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>[Exit Matt. I collapse on the couch in feverish exhaustion and fall asleep until I am later awakened by the sweet sounds of rummaging in the garage.]</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I know what you're thinking. Who asks their husband to move furniture on their birthday? And you're right. It was kind of jerky. Ordinarily I would have just waited and asked my dad when he was up visiting; but, he's still recovering from hernia surgery. (Oops. My bad.) The birthday boy obliged me and then we kicked back on the couch with some lemon bars and a little DVR'd Masterpiece. We did take one quick break, just to see how the coffee table from the living room would work in the family room. FYI...<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Actually, I just took a shower; but, you have to start somewhere. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been thinking a lot lately about reviving <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/">the blog</a>. I stopped writing about a year ago when I was feeling really overwhelmed with kids, school, and house. I started to feel like we had time to either do fun things or write about doing fun things but, not both. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, the kids are getting older (and easier!). We are rocking school and the house is kind of a lost cause. So, it seems like the ideal time to pick up where we left off. I'm terrible at printing pictures or writing things down so this really is my best chance to convince my someday grown-up children who will be, in no particular order, holed up in a science lab, living in South Beach, and digging in the cupboard for another snack, that they had it pretty darn good!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been looking back through my old posts and remembering lots of fun projects I had completely forgotten. All the pictures of my teeny tiny Dells are so much fun! AND... we're almost out of <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2010/08/homemade-ketchup-for-fun-and-profit.html">ketchup</a>. So, it's time to get going!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In order to keep myself organized AND motivated, I've decided to try to keep up a weekly schedule.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mondays: What We're Eating!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tuesdays: What We're Crafting!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thursdays: What We're Learning!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fridays: Why We're Laughing!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This may (or may not) work out. Time will tell! There may be some other randomness thrown in on the weekends! And there's always the possibility that this could be my only post ever. But, that's what will keep things exciting for YOU! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And if you find yourself feeling nostalgic like me, check out this fun <a href="http://billboard.fm/birthday-song">Birthday Song Generator</a> my friend, Jim found. On the day I was born, the number one song was "My Sharona". Matt's was "Car Wash". Aidan and Adelaide got "Sexyback" and "Single Ladies", respectively. Poor Annalise got "E.T" ft. Kanye West. I don't think I even know that song... I must have been busy <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2011/04/post-for-all-my-peeps.html">hot gluing Peeps </a>when that one came out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

I thought I would share a project we did a few months back for Adelaide's fifth birthday. We had an art themed party with rainbow layer cake, paint glob cake balls and some "creative juices". I found a lot of inspiration on Pinterest. There were tons of rainbow party and art party boards that were full of great ideas. For activities, we did a few fun arts and crafts projects like homemade rainbow dough, pipe cleaner name bracelets and these fun "Cookie Masterpieces.</div>

I made my favorite sugar cookie recipe ahead of time. I rolled the dough a little thicker than usual and cut it into rectangles. I iced them a day ahead with thick white royal icing and let them harden for the party. On the day of the party, we set them up on these tiny easels I found on the cheap and set out some new paintbrushes. For paint, I mixed powdered sugar with water and lots of food coloring and the kids got to work painting their abstract masterpieces. They had a great time and everyone got a sweet treat to take home. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I thought I'd share a fun autumn craft today (even though there is currently SNOW on the ground!!!). A few weeks ago, Addie and I decided to give Wax-Dipped Leaves a try! I found the project <a href="http://www.gsheller.com/2010/10/our-fall-beeswax-fun.html">here</a> and thought it looked like fun. It was also a great way to use up some of the beeswax I bought last year when I was on our <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html">homemade herbals kick</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKLuYvCjqoxcH8HBhkvFTip1ZkgfkMJwdaTKpj3_2D_9LmudFDyh8jouWWXGWZ0TMP-zmzpBaDP827mZ62sWxaUlJeRaOXvHE7cfjxc1FJqADvag6_g4hm6S-VCNb2lqlYZku-Wg4yaQQ/s1600/DSC_0281.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKLuYvCjqoxcH8HBhkvFTip1ZkgfkMJwdaTKpj3_2D_9LmudFDyh8jouWWXGWZ0TMP-zmzpBaDP827mZ62sWxaUlJeRaOXvHE7cfjxc1FJqADvag6_g4hm6S-VCNb2lqlYZku-Wg4yaQQ/s400/DSC_0281.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First, we collected a bunch of pretty-colored autumn leaves. It was a rainy day so we spread them out to dry well before we started dipping.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, we melted beeswax pastilles that I purchased last year from <a href="http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/">Mountain Rose Herbs</a>. They melt really quickly and smell great. I used my small crockpot that I never really use for much of anything else. It is now a beeswax only crockpot though; so, if you don't want to commit to that much beeswax crafting, you can melt it over boiling water in a glass jar or bowl.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQnByOsRn7Oa9U1TrYOTN_hp0VJqts5vp64NZZocQ5Ucgl6QH9qY4vCHytIv6Q1D1Px5r135-ts5eYf8FgIQFuXEL2_espEvVz0j4oiDulhdoT2uKOBXsWKp2Pn8ntGjfNjEBwP4q3EzU/s1600/DSC_0282.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQnByOsRn7Oa9U1TrYOTN_hp0VJqts5vp64NZZocQ5Ucgl6QH9qY4vCHytIv6Q1D1Px5r135-ts5eYf8FgIQFuXEL2_espEvVz0j4oiDulhdoT2uKOBXsWKp2Pn8ntGjfNjEBwP4q3EzU/s400/DSC_0282.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When the wax was fully melted, we just started dipping our leaves. You'll need to make sure that you collect leaves with the stems attached so that you have a handle for dipping. The wax dried really quickly, so we only needed to hold the leaf over the pot for a few seconds. We laid them on wax paper to finish hardening.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wasn't quite sure what to do with them next. Addie wanted to make necklaces; but, I thought those might be a bit scratchy and potentially sticky if you were feeling warm that day. We decided to string them with a needle and thread and hang them up as an autumn decoration. I checked them for a few days to make sure they wouldn't get too warm in the window and start to melt; but, they seem to be holding up just fine!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMXXSDfUP4GEKpmNjeH08-lwl4Za_BkuSvJnbs_ndANCQwLrO6BrldcwKVyP6ygV56Qkt2AgvH_HNlsdtZEfNHC3_i71OZYL9LDn2R18W0re3X9qny_9WXsBG2CrpaiB4g1rooXwLcWf0/s1600/DSC_0300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMXXSDfUP4GEKpmNjeH08-lwl4Za_BkuSvJnbs_ndANCQwLrO6BrldcwKVyP6ygV56Qkt2AgvH_HNlsdtZEfNHC3_i71OZYL9LDn2R18W0re3X9qny_9WXsBG2CrpaiB4g1rooXwLcWf0/s400/DSC_0300.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I saved a few extra and scattered them around the house. I'm planning to use them for our Thanksgiving place cards by writing or painting our names on them with some metallic paint. I'll let you know how those turn out!</div>

I think I paid about five bucks for the entire remnant. I had originally planned to make Aidan a little bath robe with it; but, I never really could find a pattern I liked that would be lined and also, not a giant pain. So, it has been in my stash for quite a while.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0LiGBM8Vf6Uo7qrJIMDqBYdiC0cCoxseTGTVoZMsZYEu_0JjcQB8CNNDjPgCvmQ9jvvjuNYyInQ35uE9Ah-cWJHLw3b6wQfAqyF7y9Zw3iGJeXYdjOdPOxJvHclH8arXCtq4l_H2hyphenhyphenVI/s1600/DSC_0072.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0LiGBM8Vf6Uo7qrJIMDqBYdiC0cCoxseTGTVoZMsZYEu_0JjcQB8CNNDjPgCvmQ9jvvjuNYyInQ35uE9Ah-cWJHLw3b6wQfAqyF7y9Zw3iGJeXYdjOdPOxJvHclH8arXCtq4l_H2hyphenhyphenVI/s400/DSC_0072.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On Sunday, I decided it would be a super great idea to make a blanket for Aidan's upcoming birthday. He'll be seven on Saturday. Monday, I headed to Joann's just before closing (along with five-hundred other shoppers) to take advantage of their Columbus day sale. I found this super soft turquoise blue fabric that reminded me of the old vellux blankets. I knew my snuggly Buddy would LOVE it. I, of course, also purchased several other fabrics to fill the soon-to-be-developing hole in my stash.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiCyQ5DV_3FGWNP8R_2BpZzDtxvGBU8YoNxOhw45LI0Ie81-0tSuraoNo5D4yRCHxFw55JCxsUgCnBw9eQ1ZsjNqNiGbIw-4Gjpu6MP0AXyKBztCZ7IpRAVXpRotcdBAfKiiCundLBeoE/s1600/DSC_0069.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiCyQ5DV_3FGWNP8R_2BpZzDtxvGBU8YoNxOhw45LI0Ie81-0tSuraoNo5D4yRCHxFw55JCxsUgCnBw9eQ1ZsjNqNiGbIw-4Gjpu6MP0AXyKBztCZ7IpRAVXpRotcdBAfKiiCundLBeoE/s400/DSC_0069.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I had intended to make this a really quick project. I wasn't planning to make a quilt. I was thinking I would just make a small, quick blanket, wrong-sides-together, turn it, stitch is closed and be done. BUT, I just couldn't resist giving the quilt a go. I did still have four sewing days until the party. I didn't really have any sort of a plan, the right materials, know-how or a clue. But... I had a dream and that's really all a girl and her Bernina needs, right?<br />
<br />
The project actually went surprisingly well. After I cut my fabric, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to fit it all through my machine. So, I only stitched the vertical stripes in the quilt. I'm not sure I could have actually fit enough of the quilt under my machine to manage all of the horizontal stripes AND I forgot to buy thread so I was trying to conserve my two tiny spools.<br />
<br />
I cheated on the binding and just did some folding and tucking in the corners. I'm not sure if that was wise. If anyone can identify an improperly-mitered corner, I'm sure Aidan can... and will. All of that puffy, fluffy backing was a bit of a headache to stuff through my machine. (Thank goodness for my Jeans Foot impulse buy a few years ago when I thought I would hem jeans because you know how often I need to shorten my pants.) The fluffy backing was wonderful for hiding mistakes and crooked lines and all sorts of other mishaps, though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjox4bOsbwJ284bH-WIeV7xX_bFxCKI83JbSG_ZA_dEs3aU5sTG5gdLTNAno_p4SFSDHNLv7y93zHaMBgGvikWTT7l4GXR4n1mSVhlCkOAxFzYXKtDc_ZTu3iISHUtfNIwnAf2izqv2D98/s1600/DSC_0075.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjox4bOsbwJ284bH-WIeV7xX_bFxCKI83JbSG_ZA_dEs3aU5sTG5gdLTNAno_p4SFSDHNLv7y93zHaMBgGvikWTT7l4GXR4n1mSVhlCkOAxFzYXKtDc_ZTu3iISHUtfNIwnAf2izqv2D98/s400/DSC_0075.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm really happy with the results and I think Aidan will love it. Matt said Aidan's going to still have it on his couch when he's in his thirties. I said I'm sure his wife will be ecstatic.<br />

I spent yesterday getting the house together and catching up on laundry... so, I'm just getting around to our meal plans today. I've actually got a pretty easy week in the kitchen. <br />
<br />
Tonight, I'm making Beef & Mushrooms over Brown Rice to use up some leftovers. We'll have Steamed Broccoli, Biscuits and a Pumpkin Roll for dessert.<br />
<br />
Wednesday, we're having Chicken Noodle Soup, Grilled Cheese and Fresh Fruit.<br />
<br />
Thursday, we're headed to a cookout and bonfire so I'm off the clock.<br />
<br />
On Friday, I'm making Fried "Uncle Bill" Fish, Carrots and a Tomato Basil Salad.<br />
<br />
Saturday, we're making DIY Homemade Pizzas, a Salad, and maybe some Cupcakes if I've got it in me.<br />
<br />
Sunday, for "Fancy Dinner", we're having Lobsters, Brussels Sprouts and some sort of Butternut Squash and Quinoa Gratin (recipe TBD???) and Apple Dumplings for dessert.<br />
<br />
I don't have much of anything exciting planned for breakfasts and lunches this week, just the usual, I guess! Saturday, there is lots happening all day at the farm market so we might just get breakfast and lunch while we're there!<br />
<br />
What are you cooking this week??? Let me know in the comments below! I'm always looking for inspiration!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm trying to get back into meal planning around here now that all the summer fun has passed. We're busy with school, church, cub scouts and music lessons and dinner seems to creep up quickly without a plan. I started up our Door to Door subscription again for the fall; and, I want to make sure that I take advantage of all the goodies in our boxes... it definitely takes some planning to use all that kale!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So... here's my plan for the week:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Monday: Pulled Pork Tacos with Corn Salsa (I just put a dry-rubbed pork shoulder in the Crock Pot and made some salsa with all our leftover odds and ends from the weekend: corn, tomatoes, red onions, cilantro and lime. I've got corn tortillas, cheese and plain yogurt to go with. Matt's in charge of dinner on Monday nights while I take Aidan to CCD. I try to at least have a plan for him and a few things started. For dessert, I made a yummy Chocolate Ganache Raspberry Tart. We had tons of raspberries left from our picking this weekend and I already had the tart dough in the freezer so it seemed like just the right choice!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tuesday: Dinner Out</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wednesday: Spaghetti and Meatballs, Steamed Broccoli, Garlic Bread and a Salad. We have four different activities Wednesday evening; so, I wanted something quick and easy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thursday: Beef Brisket Sandwiches with Homemade Rolls and Green Beans... I may make some French Fries for Ads so she won't suffer too greatly.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Friday: Baked Chicken, Buttered Noodles and Broccoli and Carrots (I'm headed out of town for the weekend so I'm planning to make big batches of everything all week so that Matt and the kids will have plenty to eat! Little Caesar's is pretty close though, so I think they'll be just fine!)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For lunches this week, I'm planning to make Stir Fried Veggies and Rice, Turkey Noodle Soup (with leftovers from last night's <a href="http://youngstownbread.blogspot.com/2012/10/scenes-from-fancy-dinner.html">"Fancy Dinner"</a>) and some Kale Chips. The other days we'll fill in with leftovers. Nothing super exciting on the breakfast front; but, I do want to make biscuits one morning to have with the Crock Pot Apple Butter I made last night. It is delicious! I was a little worried that it made such a huge batch; but, now that I've tasted it, I think we will have no problems polishing it off!</div>
<br />

<br />
This weekend we made our annual family apple picking pilgrimage. Eight years ago, Matt asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday and I chose apple picking. It's now become our yearly birthday tradition and I really look forward to it. We've picked in all sorts of weather over the last eight years; but, this year, we really lucked out and had awesome weather and an awesome day. As usual, we picked WAY TOO MANY APPLES! I think we ended up with two bushels plus eight quarts of raspberries. There was still a little room under our feet on the way home so we stopped and bought 10 pumpkins and a giant bag of corn... what more could a girl want for her birthday?!?Lindsayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05530604466148433510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-593467206657978246.post-45718723693050923712013-05-07T11:22:00.000-04:002013-05-07T11:22:14.287-04:00I have ALWAYS got the notion!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This week's Iron Craft Challenge (#9) was <a href="http://www.justcraftyenough.com/2013/04/iron-craft-13-challenge-9-ive-got-a-notion/">"I've Got A Notion"</a>. We were supposed to use materials from the notions aisle and highlight them in our project. I had some fun cowboy buttons that I'd been saving up for a project as well as some cool new burlap ribbon that I wanted to try.</div>

I decided to make these fun Cowboy Hair Clips for the girls. I used leftover fabric from a dress that I made for Addie over the weekend. Annalise has a little shirt in the same fabric; but, I'm not quite finished with it yet. I crafted some fabric flowers and then attached a cowboy themed button to the center of each. I wrapped some giant snap clips in wide burlap ribbon and attached my homemade flowers. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm a day late on my menu planning for the week. I was forced to spend all weekend locked away in a river front house crafting with friends AND then we had dinner out last night. I know what you're thinking, and, yes, it was all just as terrible as it sounds.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The pics are from last week's "Mexican Night"; or, if you prefer the unabridged format: "AGHGHGGHH, There Is Shredded Cheese Everywhere, I Swear This Is THE LAST TIME I Am Making Mexican Night".</div>

This Week I'm planning...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Monday: Roast Chicken with Carrots, Macaroni and Cheese and Zucchini Cake for dessert.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tuesday: Lentil Rogan Josh, Curried Rice and Naan. (We're studying India this week so I thought the kids could help with this dinner prep -not certain how much help they'll be with the actual eating; but, sometimes they surprise me!).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wednesday: T-Ball Night, so it's the ever popular "Bowl of Noodles" at 4:30 dinner.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thursday: <a href="http://www.thegardengrazer.com/2012/03/black-bean-spinach-enchiladas.html">Black Bean and Spinach Enchiladas</a> with DIY Tostadas (Shredded cheese is on the list, I am clearly unable to heed my own warning.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Friday: Berbere Chicken and Rice (Berbere seasoning was the freebie at Penzey's this month so I'm trying a recipe I found in their catalog. I'm thinking it is probably pretty hot, so I'll make plain chicken for my lovelies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For lunches, I'm planning to make <a href="http://www.heatherchristo.com/cooks/2013/04/30/chicken-coconut-curry-soup-plus-a-giveaway/">Chicken Coconut Curry Soup</a>, Homemade Pretzels and the <a href="http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/quinoa-salad-with-sugar-snap-peas">Quinoa Salad with Sugar Snap Pea</a>s that was on last week's menu. We didn't get around to it last week; but, not to worry, it was substituted for an equally healthy lunch of Hot and Ready's, Crazy Bread and Dilly Bars. We did have strawberries to balance things out!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
No menu plans for the weekend. We're headed to Ohio to celebrate Annalise's birthday! She turns the big 0-2 on Friday!</div>
